Frequently asked questions

Is this a public library?

No. The collection is owned and housed in a private artist’s studio in Durham, Maine. This is a non-lending reference library, which means the material stays on the premises.

Can I visit?

Yes! Visitors are welcome. You can make an appointment for a casual visit by emailing us, or you can request we pull specific titles for you by filling out the Material Request Form below. While you’re on site, you’re welcome to make copies, notes, or sketches. We have a copier here that you can use for free, within a reasonable number of pages.

So is this just someone’s personal collection of smut?

Pretty much, yeah. However, our mission is to encourage people to explore sexuality—— both their own and as a subject fundamental to the human experience—— from an intellectually curious place. Reading, learning, and talking about sex and desire helps to emancipate sexuality from a place of cultural stigma and shame.

I have some erotic books or magazines I want to get rid of. Do you accept donations to the collection?

Yes, we gratefully welcome donations. If you have a collection or title you’d like to donate, please email us at eroticlibraryofmaine@gmail.com and we will take a look.

Are you a 501c3?

Lol, no, we’re just a lady in the woods who loves books.
